Adopt a Canal – first session Sat 14th Oct

The Canal & River Trust has recently launched an Adopt a Canal scheme, where local community groups can ‘adopt’ a section of their local canal. The JQNF is interested in adopting the stretch of canal that runs through the JQ. This is the Farmers Bridge flight of locks (locks 1 – 13).

We have an introductory session on:
Saturday 14th October

Time: 12.25pm (for at 12.30pm start).
Meeting place: meet at Cambrian House (pictured), the Canal & River Trust office on the canal (B1 2AN)
RSVP: please email Thomas on twildish [at] gmail [dot] com if you plan to attend, so we know to expect you.

Please also email if you’re interested in being involved but cannot make the 14th, so we can gauge interest – there will be plenty of opportunities for you to engage in the future as this will be an ongoing activity.

What we’ll be doing: We’ll meet with Nick Cleaver, from the Canal and River Trust. We will walk the section of the canal we’re looking to adopt, Nick will talk about the scheme in general, and we’ll collectively do a bit of an audit of what needs to be done, and agree what we’d like to do on our stretch of canal over the coming year. We will also do some basic activities, such as littler picking and weeding, just to get a taste of what some of the volunteering activity will involve. So it will be quite a gentle introductory session, but please dress appropriately.

Finish time: we’d originally planned to finish at 4pm, but given the plan for the day it’s likely we will finish earlier.

More about the Adopt a Canal Scheme
Examples of how other community groups have improved their stretch of canal include:
– Keeping towpaths clean and clear
– Creating adventure trails for families to explore
– Helping improve habitats for local wildlife
– Planting trees and building community gardens
– Organising events to bring local people together
